Prinsip kekekalan energi dan berbagai persamaan tingkat keadaan memungkinkan pemecahan berbagai persoalan teknik yang penting dan menarik. Analisis energi yang dilakukan pada sebuah persoalan teknik hakekatnya adalah suatu cara analitis penyelesaian permasalahan dimana berbagai perpindahan energi ke dan dari suatu sistem yang ditinjau serta berbagai perubahan energi didalam sistem tersebut diperhitungkan.

Dikenal dua jenis cara analitis dalam persoalan teknik, yaitu:
 
analisis sistem (formulasi sistem)
 
analisis volume kontrol (formulasi volume kontrol)
 
Analisis pergerakan fluida, pada umumnya, melakukan pengembangan-pengembangan persamaan dasar dalam bentuk integral untuk diterapkan pada volume-volume kontrol. Dua alasan utama mengapa formulasi volume kontrol lebih banyak dipakai dari pada formulasi sistem, yaitu, pertama, media fluida mampu berdistorsi dan berdeformasi secara terus menerus. Hal ini sangat sulit untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengikuti sutu massa fluida yang sama sepanjang waktu (hal ini harus dilakukan dalam memakai formulasi sistem). Kedua, kita lebih tertarik tidak dalam hal gerakan sejumlah tertentu massa fluida, tapi dalam hal akibat gerakan fluida pada suatu alat atau struktur. Jadi penerapan hukum-hukum dasar pada sebuah volume yang tetap, yaitu menggunakan analisis sebuah volume kontrol, pada umumnya lebih sesuai untuk kasus-kasus gerakan fluida.
 
Dari ilmu mekanika dan termodinamika kita telah mengenali hukum-hukum dasar untuk sebuah sistem. Kita akan melakukan pendekatan dalam mengembangkan suatu formulasi matematis hukum-hukum dasar ini untuk sebuah volume kontrol. Hasilnya adalah sebuah formulasi umum yang dapat memenuhi logika untuk mengubah sebuah analisis sistem  menjadi sebuah analisis volume kontrol.

Dalam analisis sistem  suatu lingkup permasalahan diformulasikan menjadi sebuah sistem di dalam mana terdapat sejumlah massa. Massa tersebut diidentifikasikan untuk kemudian diterapkan prinsip kekekalan energi dan berbagi perumusan tingkat keadaan atau hukum-hukum dasar.
 
Langkah yang paling penting dalam analisis formulasi sistem adalah penentuan dari basis waktu (time base). Ini dapat berupa suatu perioda waktu yang diketahui, atu jangka waktu yang diperlukan bagi terjadinya suatu gejala, atau jika tidak kedua-duanya, maka perumusan dilakukan atas dasar laju sesaat (instantaneous rate).
 
Analisis formulasi sistem  dilakukan dengan menggunakan simbol-simbol untuk menyatakan berbagai perpindahan energi ke dan dari sistem, dan suatu konvensi tanda harus secara konsisten diterapkan untuk menyatakan arah berbagai aliran energi. Hal yang penting dalam suatu analisis energi adalah kemampuan untuk mengenali semua perpindahan energi yang berlangsung serta berbagai perubahan yang terjadi dan menghubungkannya secara matematis dengan wajar. Hubungan atau korespondensi satu-satu harus selalu ada diantara berbagai aliran energi yang diperlihatkan pada sketsa sistem  dengan suku-suku yang muncul dalam keseimbangan energi.
 
Setelah diperoleh rumusan keseimbangan energi, maka langkah berikutnya adalah pengumpulan informasi lain secukupnya untuk menyederhanakan persoalan menjadi sebuah persamaan dengan satu variable yang tidak diketahui (satu anu). Informasi lain dapat berupa berbagai persamaan tingkat keadaan, informasi mengenai hakekat proses, atau informasi lain yang diperoleh dari prinsip kekekalan massa, hukum Newton, atau berbagi prinsip fundamental lainnya terhadap sistem.
 
Untuk menyederhanakan persoalan yang dihadapi hingga proposi yang dapat ditanggapi, haruslah dibuat berbagai pendekatan dan idealisasi. Kadangkala idealisasi-idealisasi secara implisit ditunjukkan pada sketsa sistem. Misalnya, tidak dicantumkannya suku perpindahan energi W, yang berarti bahwa perpindahan energi sebagai kerja dapat diabaikan dalam periode waktu selama keseimbangtan energi dirumuskan. Berbagi idealisasi tersebut dicantumkan pada awal suatu analisis agar mudah melakukan revisi apabila diperlukan.
 
Pembuatan suatu sketsa yang baik dari sistem yang dianalisis, lengkap dengan semua suku energinya yang relevan, sangat berharga untuk merumuskan pemikiran mengenai proses yang berlangsung, menjaga konsistensi meliputi seluruh analisis, dan menemukan berbagai langkah yang harus diambil untuk menyelesaikan analisis.
 
Dalam kebanyakan analisis kita harus mencari cara untuk menentukan tingkat keadaan zat pada awal dan akhir proses. Selain itu kita juga harus menentukan suatu pernyataan proses untuk membantu menemukan cara manakala kita memecahkan suatu persoalan yang kompleks. Jadi pernyataan proses harus selalu digambar sebelum melakukan analisis agar pemikiran dapat diorientasikan secara tepat dan efisien.
 
Metodologi analisis formulasi sistem atas dasar keseimbangan energi dapat diringkas sebagai berikut:
 
Definisikan sistem dengan teliti dan lengkap dengan menunjukkan batas-batasnya dalam suatu sketsa
 
Tulis daftar idealisasi yang relevan
 
Tunjukkan berbagai aliran energi yang akan diikutsertakan dalam keseimbangan energi dan cantumkan tanda bagi berbagai aliran energi tersebut pada sketsa sistem.
 
Nyatakan basis waktu bagi keseimbangan energi
 
Buat sketsa pernyataan proses
 
Tulis keseimbangan energi dengan menggunakan simbol-simbol yang tampil pada sketsa sistem dimana harus terdapat korespondensi satu-satu diantara suku-suku persamaan dengan simbol-simbol sketsa.
 
Himpun persamaan tingkat keadaan dan informasi lain yang diperlukan untuk memungkinkan pemecahan persoalan.
 
Kadangkala untuk kasus-kasus tertentu, akan terlalu luas apabila kita mulai dengan penerapan keseimbangan energi. Penerapan hukum-hukum dasar atau perumusan tingkat keadaan yang telah dikembangkan dari hukum-hukum dasar tersebut sudah cukup untuk menyelesaikan sebuah kasus ilmiah ataupun teknik, dengan syarat bahwa lingkup permasalahan telah diformulasikan ke dalam suatu sistem yang telah diidentifikasikan. Akan tetapi, jalan pemecahan masalahnya harus tetap konsisten terhadap pernyataan bahwa energi suatu sistem apapun adalah kekal, yakni energi tidak dapat diciptakan dan dimusnahkan.
 
Metodologi formulasi sistem atas dasar keseimbangan energi-energi yang telah dijelaskan diatas memang masih terlalu umum, tetapi ini merupakan suatu usaha atau cara pemikiran terhadap masalah agar sistematis dan terorganisasi.
 
Informasi mengenai keseimbangan energi saja tidaklah cukup untuk menyelesaikan persoalan. Untuk melengkapi dan memperjelas konvergensi penyelesaian masalah, hukum-hukum dasar dapat diterapkan pada massa yang ditinjau dalam formulasi sistem.
